    I once hosted a banquet, a banquet with [47 dishes]. Back then {world}'s infrastructure still worked, and guests arrived on time…

    Forty-seven. I had a chef imported from the Cygnus Belt at considerable expense who wept, [wept], when he saw my spice inventory. The third course alone took eleven hours to prepare. It cannot be rushed.

    That sounds excessive.

    To the uninitiated. Maybe. What you call excess [was] the point: someone cared enough to spend eleven hours on a sauce for you.

    The food was never just food. It was an argument. An argument that defies the eventual heat death of the universe.

    That the person across the table from you is [worth] eleven hours of someone's life, in our unified struggle to find meaning.

    Long John makes that argument with a fish and a pot of hot oil on a planet that tried to kill him.
